Established by the <a title=\"European Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Commission\">European Commission<\/a> in 2007, the ERC is composed of an independent Scientific Council, its governing body consisting of distinguished researchers, and an Executive Agency, in charge of the implementation. It forms part of the framework programme of the union dedicated to research and innovation, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Horizon 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horizon_2020\">Horizon 2020<\/a>, preceded by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Seventh Research Framework Programme\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seventh_Research_Framework_Programme\">Seventh Research Framework Programme<\/a> (FP7). The ERC budget is over \u20ac13 billion from 2014 \u2013 2020 and comes from the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Horizon 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horizon_2020\">Horizon 2020<\/a> programme, a part of the European Union&#8217;s budget. Under Horizon 2020 it is estimated that around 7,000 ERC grantees will be funded and 42,000 team members supported, including 11,000 doctoral students and almost 16,000 post-doctoral researchers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d4fb77b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d4fb77b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f803660\" data-id=\"f803660\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7c57c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a7c57c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify;\">Researchers from any field can compete for the grants that support pioneering projects. The ERC competitions are open to top researchers also from outside the union. The average success rate is about 12%.<\/span><span id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\" style=\"font-size: 12.75px; line-height: 0; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; top: -0.5em; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; text-align: justify;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Five ERC grantees have won Nobel Prizes.\u00a0Grant applications are assessed by qualified experts. Excellence is the sole criterion for selection; there are neither thematic priorities, nor geographical quotas for funding. Starting Grants are intended to finance excellent projects led by promising early-career researchers with 2 to 7 years experience after PhD.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"facts_numbered\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">To be funded by an ERC Starting Grant, the proposal must meet the following conditions:\u00a0<\/p><ul class=\"list_arrows\" dir=\"ltr\"><li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications can be made in <strong>any field of research<\/strong><br \/>Research must be conducted in <strong>a public or private research organisation<\/strong> (known as a Host Institution\/HI) in one of <strong>the\u00a0EU <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/about-eu\/countries\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Member States<\/a> <strong>or\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research\/participants\/data\/ref\/h2020\/grants_manual\/hi\/3cpart\/h2020-hi-list-ac_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Countries<\/a><\/li><li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications for an ERC grant will be submitted by a single Principal Investigator (PI) in conjunction with and on behalf of their Host Institution.<\/li><li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Host Institution commits to offer\u00a0appropriate conditions for the Principal Investigator independently to direct the research and manage its funding for the duration of the project.\u00a0The PI does not necessarily need to be working at the host institution at the time when the proposal is submitted.\u00a0<\/li><li style=\"text-align: justify;\">ERC grants support projects carried out by <strong>an individual researcher<\/strong> who can employ researchers of any nationality as team members.
